DUPE-LEX

DUPE-LEX
A Family Evening That Turned Into A Nightmare!

Ok so I guess Karachi is really not that conservative now that Ramadan is here.  Being the first Ramadan weekend we decided that as Ramadan had just begun we would go to the movies as it would be slow and no rush!

I booked three tickets for my wife, my mother and myself.  Nueplex gave us a time for the 8:50 show!  Somehow that got cancelled so we got a call and were told to come for the 1150pm show.  When we got there I was standing in line and about 16 – 18 gutka chewing lads were behind me and one could smell the pungent smell of hash!  I got my tickets and the boys saw that I joined my wife and my mother to go up to the cinema and leered remarks that were uncalled for!

Upstairs it was a mad rush – seemed like Empress Market was giving stuff for free (that kind of rush and that kind of crowd).  Apparently  Transformers seemed to be a huge hit and everyone was going for that.  Our Tickets were for “Lekar Hum Deewana Dil” so the Cinema was not at all packed (lots of empty seats) we boutght our food and were taken and sat down on our three seats by the usher as my wife is expecting!

A few minutes later all those 17 – 18 chaps stumbled in and the usher came running and asked us for our tickets.  The movie was about to start and there must have been over 40 odd seats empty all over.  He told me I had to move as I was sitting between my wife and mother and that my seat was 4 rows up.  I told him that I did not want to move alone and one of those boys who was standing in front of me went three rows down to his buddies and stated talking loudly how his setting was gone that he could not sit between two bachis.

The chaps with him were all laughing loudly and said they would see to me and then the three of us after the movie and he should find another bachi to sit next to!  Seeing this we got up and I went down!  The staff gave me a really tough time and said he HAD to sit at our seats and nothing could be done despite 40 odd seats being empty!  So feeling very uncomfortable I asked for a refund!

When I was denied a refund I tried to explain to the team that my wife is expecting and that my mother is with me and we were uncomfortable so we were asked to leave the theatre to the reception!  From the top I could here leers from the boys “setting kharab hoa gayi... aunty wasap aa jaao”

As we went out and were told to leave as there was a huge rush for Transformers I asked for my money back!  When this was denied I was introduced to an overweight chap in a tie who left a local celebrity and seemed very annoyed he looked me up and down and as i was in a shalwar kameez he blurted “App jantay hain ke mein kaun hoon?”  I honestly would have had some londa fun and asked back “If you don’t know how you are how do I know who are you?” but because I had my family with me I kept quiet  I could not pick a fight even if I wanted to!  He was so busy waxing the egos of everyone in a trouser and fake polo T-shirts (from DeFANCE) that he dismissed me because i was in a shalwar Kamiz!

This chap took my tickets and held them to my nose saying “I am Nadeem Ahmed the manager and there is NO refund...you are not from defance read the ticket!”  Then this guy in front of my mother and wife calls over a few of his staff and tells me “what will you do?”  “Leave now and don’t threaten me!” he handed me my tickets back and said “lift udhar hai – you don’t threaten me!” when he put his hand in to shake mine I gripped his firmly and said ok… (IN ENGLISH) “I am leaving but I assure you I will handle this my way!”  He said to his boys “see he is threatening me!”  Then he asked me how I would handle it and I told him I would write about it in the press!  He laughed at me and said he was the pres.  He grabbed my tickets and turned around and a local TV celebrity who knew me smiled at me and winked then whispered something in his ears after which this chap quickly pulled out 1500 rupees out of his pocket, said nothing and threw it at me!

I am sad that in Pakistan where there are virtually NO family entertainment places people invest billions in a new place and call it “the place” (how original) but in reality this place does not have any standards and allows any riff raff in and then they complain when these stags bring in vodka in water bottles and act vulgarly in front of families.

Also the management of a cinema should differentiate how to deal with londas and family people especially when a senior lady and a pregnant woman are accompanying someone!   The last time I went there was when Ragini MMS was released and I thought that a sausage fest for this kind of Sunny Leone thing is ok as we were also a huge lot of people…  BUT This was a family movie…

WHAT A HORRID EXPERIENCE “MR. NADEEM AHMED – SINCE YOU DO NOT KNOW WHO YOU ARE AND HAD TO ASK ME I REALISED THAT YES I DO KNOW YOU – I JUST REALISED YOU ARE THE BIGGEST WANKER THAT CROSSED OVER TEEN HATTI KA PUL AND GOT A JOB IN DEFANCE!”  GO FUCK YOURSELF!

MY REQUEST TO YOU PEOPLE IS TO NEVER GO TO NUEPLEX AS IT IS LONDA HEAVEN WHERE ANYONE ON A CD 70 HAS A SETTING TO SIT WITH BACHIS – THIS IS AN UNSAFE ENVIRONMENT FOR ANY AND EVERY ONE WITH A FAMILY!  IF YOU OBJECT MR. NADEEM AHMED WITH ANTAGNOIZE YOU, THREATEN THE WOMEN WITH YOU AND FIGHT WITH YOU UNTIL YOU DO REACT!

  1. I'm sorry about the horrible experience that you guys must have had, but I'm afraid several of the things you're complaining about seem to not be the fault of the cinema operators. For starters, if it was an empty screening, why did you not book your seats all together? Secondly, while I'm all in favour of keeping the riff raff out, I'm afraid having a no-guys policy isn't the best way to go about it. For instance, what if I want to go out and see a movie with one of my other guy friends? Its not right for us to be denied entry just because of misbehaving hooligans.

  2. Horrible. This whole story is believable because my last two trips to "the place" had very similar scenarios going around. With kids, families and elders around, the management picked a fight witha man who was there to watch a movie with family. Things got out of control right at the entrance of cinema 1.

  3. Amyn, a few weeks ago I was trying to organize an outing for my kid's class to the movies. It would have been about 100 people including kids, siblings and parents. To make special arrangements I called Neuplex and was told that I needed to contact Guest Relations Officer Nadeem at phone numbers 0300-246-6903 or 0334-205-2700. Over the next several days I called him, left messages and never heard back. Finally I received a message giving me a time which suited him, at which to call him. Talk about pathetic guest relations. Needless to say we did our class outing elsewhere.

  4. 'The Place' is a Hell after 11:00 pm. People with family must avoid late night shows as its the same sort of environment in all the cinemas. You can say Atrium is a bit better due to strict security but still not a family place for late night shows.

    1. i agree... All cinemas are like that i wud say.... this is the problem with all desi people... u will encounter such people everywhere. i live in the middle-east and whenever there are desi bachelors around... these cheap things are meant to happen...last time i went to cinema when i was maybe 12 yr old... and dat was it... i decided i will never ever go to such a cheap place ever in my life...

a note to the blogger, sir i know what happened wid u and ur family was really bad and shudn't have happened in the first place. because i am a girl too, i know how it feels. but maybe you shud think twice before blindly blaming anybody else. you're the protector of ur own family. why did u take ur family to cinema? do u know cheapos are everywhere?? not only in pakistan. even in middle-east. if you're disobeying Allah then this is meant to happen.this was a signal from GOD. please try to understand.

  5. Very sad to hear that you had to endure this experience. I truly hope that the manager Mr. Nadeem Ahmed reads this because this reflects very poorly on how the Place and Nuplex cinema is run. Its sad considering that he is probably a low life piece of shit pro dick sucker and thats why he is manager but this will cost Nuplex customers. Worst part, good customers that bring their families to use the facilites of the place as a family place to be. Mr Nadeem Ahmed wants his ghunda paan eat faggits to stay so he can literally fuck himself. Better than that I hope that the owner of Nuplex reads this and calles Mr Nadeem Ahmed to his office and makes him beg on his knees for a job. Who the fuck is he anyway? hes just a fucking manager, thats no role or anything. Seriously sorry that you had to face this esp infront of your family. Cleary Mr Nadeem Ahmed doesnt have a mother, wife or any daughters because he doesnt realize one must be courteous to people esp when women are around. He probably went up to those gutka eating monsters and kissed them each mouth to mouth because he sounds like a classles fuck wit. He probably doesnt even live in Defance. I hope monday Nadeem Ahmed has no job. Seriously furious and probaby never going to the place or Nuplex again. I urge all self respecting people to do the same. Let the mehlas have this one a new mall and cinema will be up shortly im sure.

Mr Nadeem Ahmed you are basically the worst individual on the planet

  7. Amin Bhai I agree completely it is not for family at all! I went there some weeks ago with my sister and her kids to see Raam Lila we were in the top rows there were 2 couples in front of us making noise. They kept quiet as the movie started and 20 minutes after the movie started one couple got up when we asked him to sit he told us to wait for a minute then he bent down and pulled up his pants and they left 10 minutes later same thing happened with the second couple. The girl in the second couple as leaving turned and threw a bunch of wet napkins at us which fell on my 13 years old daughter... It was late afternoon show... we complained to the boys at the door and they smiled and said that these people also pay us a lot! After that we stopped going there and when my husband complained they threatened us!

  8. It's an utter failure of cinema management. Regrettable!! Hope the owners pay a little more attention towards FAMILY ENTERTAINMENT, rather than their staff saying they pay us too.

  9. You must be a partner from other cinemas since defence crowd is more tilted towards nueplex :P

    2. The only reason, us, defence people, are tilted towards "The Place" is because we don't have to go to Saddar... and we hate universe cineplex. I am not at all against boys being allowed, in fact I am against "Family Days" at various malls and cinemas, given that a lot of bachelors live in Karachi and don't have much to do over the weekend.. but such "gutka chabanay wala" crowd should be controlled, and if they are behaving badly, should be warned.
I once went with my fiance to watch a movie, and we were only two, and cinema had around 30-50 available seats, the person at the ticket counter was dumb enough to give us one seat at the top, and one at the bottom! In the middle of the movie, my fiance had to go out to get it changed, but thankfully no scene was created.

  10. Real bummer to hear about your ordeal. Hope your story can spread fast on social media so these cinema houses can have stricter admission policy to these annoying large groups of boys who are usually looking for a fight. Dont agree about the honda cd 70 thing though, agar garee nahin hai to dil to hain na bhai.

  11. Hi Amyn
Just read your blog ! Absolutely terrible ! Just to let you know, we represent Atrium Mall and cinemas and after reading your blog we have decided to retrain our own staff on family values and behavior with family customers, even thou they have been trained before on how to deal in a situation like this, we feel it's our moral responsibility to do so!, we at Atrium do not believe in gender discrimination but we do hold a right to admission policy, we have numerous times refunded customers causing problems at Atrium for other customers, the other customers passing remarks at your family should have been requested to leave the premises by the management as soon as the usher had seen them doing so ! Paying less or more does not make a difference ! Nor does being from defence or Nazimabad and what you wear! As long as the customer enjoys and let others enjoy also and
Rest assured Amyn ! Your voice has been heard ! And we hope others in Cinema industry hear about it also !
I request all viewers to voice their opinion in our social media pages if such an incident happens at our complex

    1. Oddly enough your team is very well qualified and probably one of the best i have seen when it comes to delivering professionalism!

The good thing is that even though new places have opened your client base is still strong due to the focus upon "quality family entertainment" rather than money (which is important!)

The only other cinema I love to go to is CINEPLEX as it is warm friendly and without an attitude! One gets to relax there like at Atrium as the family is safe and secure!

PLEASE NOTE - I did not write do defame a place that was NOT my intention however i wanted to voice what happened to ME and my family!

  12. Amyn, you must address a letter to the owner of Nueplex. I gather you are an influential socialite with knowing the right people so you have must use your good offices to bring it to the owners notice. Many a times in service industry employees are the culprits & owners totally aloof to what is happening to their institute/business/establishment. Please Don't do Nadeem Ahmed a favour by keeping quite & by Not informing the owners of Nueplex. Do it for all the customers to save them the humiliation & frustration you went thru.

  14. It breaks my heart so bad after reading this. I live in west and every day I crave to be back in my country and where every minute I don't have to use my judgment if something is halal for me or harram. Vodka, weed and such vulgar places, I can't imagine have become so much acceptable there.

I just want to recommend everyone who reads this article to please go to the nueplex website and faceboom page and gove them a piece of your mind. I have letf them a msg on both and let them know that they just lost me as a customer until they apologise to you and change their policy! We stand with you bro.

  17. I went with my brothers for late night transformers show on a weekend.. the crowd scene haa surely changed..it was full of leering and those maila remarks types.. back row had some stupid illiterate types.. gud 8 or 9 of them. Throughout the movie we had to listen to their cheap loud commentary which was directed at the girl in the movie or hall.. it was a very embarrassing n disturbing experience.. literally had to stop my brothers from getting into a fight with them. 2 n a half hr movie was a torture..
Nuplex owners should look into this matter.. whatever the cause needs to be sorted out before they loose it all..
There has to be a way.. manager or whatever is the problem.. no girl would wana go n get humiliated.. on top of that reading above horror stories like those two couples who threw wet tissues.. my God how could the management just reply with bcz they pay us more!!! Unbelievable....
They should fire such ppl right at the moment..

  20. Not surprised to read this but nevertheless, it sucks and I hope none of us have to be in your shoes.

    Few things:
    1. They should get rid of this stupid assigned seating policy. The ushers, for some reason, are trained to act like robots and not humans. If 40 seats are empty, what difference does it make where you sit? It's ridiculous and must be scratched. Unless it's huge movie in it's first few days, let it be on a first come first serve basis.
    2. Scratch these late night shows too. Keep the last show around 10-10.30pm. Yes, it means less business for the cinemas and less shows for the audience to choose from, but safety comes first, correct? You have to drive home. Wouldn't want to drive home at 2am in Karachi.

    3. Instead of a family only requirement, these cinemas could quite easily have a family show and one non family. All the groups that ruin your movie could be let into the latter category. It's quite simple. It's not rocketscience.

    4. They should hire female ushers for family shows. Female management would be even better. If they're making enough dough, they could pay the management well and hire some qualified personnel. Not PHDs, but local college grads would be good enough.

A few things that can change our movie experience.

  21. You should file an official letter of complaint with the authorities at Neuplex, and that manager should be fired. We are all sick and tired of being afraid to do anything for fear of getting harassed like this. I am shocked to read all the stories that have been shared in the comments as well. Its not just these goons. My husband and I were harassed by the bloody police on our way back from a show on the Neuplex road, who insisted we couldn't possibly be married and wouldn't leave us alone until we were saved because an acquaintance happened to drive up and recognised our car and stopped to see why we were being held up. They had already snatched our wallet and were speaking in threatening tones until we were fortunately interrupted by our friends. cannot relax at all in this godforsaken country. Please do not leave this matter as it is, please follow up and hold that ass hole accountable. I'm sorry that your pregnant wife had to go through this.

  22. Turns out that this guy has previously worked for the cinema industry and aspires to bring another cinema house in the city. He is an entrepreneur and and as per my understanding he is willing to invest his money in this industry. Nueplex, currently being one of the best cinema houses in pakistan, is a huge hurdle for him and his to be open cinema house.
There should be a real and proper investigation of this incident and if what he is stating is wrong then should be treated well for defaming a well functioning organization.

PS:All this could well be wrong as i am judging this from what his Linkdin account says. and aymen you didnt have to delete the recommendation that your colleague from CINEPAX wrote just because it said alot about your intentions to open up a cinema house in karachi.

  27. This is disgusting to say the least but not really surprising. Us pakistanis can emulate the facade but everything from professionalism to mannerisms takes genuine understanding , efforts and integrity so it is obvious we dont see any. However I do wish you hadnt mentioned 'Defance' or 'Teen Hatti' etc. That is just snobbish and petty.

  28. A week before Ramzan I took my kid to watch that dragon trainer movie. At the entrance gate, the Place's security was harassing this kid who wanted to go in with his laptop back pack. He had movie tickets on him and was reasoning with them saying his bag will get deposited outside the cinema just like he leaves his camera etc. They misbehaved with him so much that he tore the tickets into pieces. Thats the last time I'd ever go there,

    ReplyDelete
  29. I haven't been to the Nueplex cinema yet, as surprising as that may be for a lot of people who 'NEED' to visit every new ;cool; place which opens up every now and then. Coincidentally, just the other day i was planning on taking my younger siblings there as my brother wanted to watch transformers but thank you for this blog, i think it is the last place i shall go to after reading what you and your family has to face.
See the biggest problem with our Pakistani awaam is that we never speak up, the restaurants may give us baasi food and the cinemas may be extremely unclean but people fail to speak up when they witness something wrong. I have parents who always speak up to the manager or the staff, if they are unsatisfied or enraged at something.
Others though have a habit of accepting everything quietly and i truly respect you for speaking up and making others aware of this situation. I hope there are more people like you out there.

  34. Its really heartbreaking to read such a whiny article. What most of you are complaining about are the citizens of Karachi, rather than the cinema itself. It's sad enough that we live in these little DHA-clifton bubbles, but to complain about the leaks in our perfect world where god forbid we are confronted with the rest of the 18-20 million citizens of the city - is shameful. It is a ludicrous expectation to deny men the right to watch movies with their male friends, if you don't like their behaviour around women - then think about the fucking social issues, and invest your resources in educating these people rather than wasting those resources on maintaining your cushioned, air-conditioned, reality-proof lives. Don't use your expecting wife and your mum's old age as an excuse to hide behind your incompetence and inability to handle a situation. I'm a young woman, and I can clearly say you have no idea what it is to be a woman in that city. And it is also not your responsibility to try to "protect" us from the realities of the world, let alone try to assume you know what it is like for us. Don't you dare.

"Also the management of a cinema should differentiate how to deal with londas and family people especially when a senior lady and a pregnant woman are accompanying someone!" - Grow some balls Mr Family-man, and confront the world you live in. Can you imagine the lives of the women these "londas" marry, while they are expecting? Don't you dare, for a second, allow yourself to think that you're a victim here. You are nothing but a child crying and whining about your candy not being sweet enough for you. Although, it makes sense through reading this article, why you're so desperate to overcompensate for your shortcomings.

"The last time I went there was when Ragini MMS was released and I thought that a sausage fest for this kind of Sunny Leone thing is ok as we were also a huge lot of people… BUT This was a family movie…" - *LONDA ALERT* BTW, you have zero rights. Like NONE. Not a single one to declare which movies are "family" movies and which are okay for what kind of people. You can maybe earn that right in your household, but even the thought of that is depressing for me.

Also, get your shit in order. You're degrading the "londas" and want that the cinema take responsibility and deal with them differently as opposed to you, Mr Family-guy, in all your high educated glory and sophistication and your english skills. Meanwhile you're offended by the manager's attitude towards you for wearing shalwar kameez. Sounds like a perfect match to me. You deserved what you got, hero.

I will hope and pray that you're a better father, than all of this suggests.

    2. You are a brat. The only whining I see here is from you, you just want to talk about yourself, and given a chance you will happily persecute others so that you can be worshipped.

disclaimer: I'm not Pakistani, so take this with a grain of salt (I'm not an "Indian" Hindu either, BTW). Too many Pakistani women have a chip on their shoulder where they do this, thanks to the societal violence perpetrated on them. As a some have this seriously dysfunctional holier-than-thou almost misanthropic attitude, with disengenous prudish tendencies. What will you do? Heal society, child. But I think you are one of those who need curing. All you have done just clarify gender aspect of dysfunctional society and governance by showing yourself (you are really not writing about the suffering of anyone except of you). There are more dimensions still, including more gender, class, language, ethnic and others.

This man shared an unpleasant and traumatic experience. And was airing it out. The proper response for his experience would be to teach all these misbehaving people a lesson. My writing this wouldn't be necessary if you were a little more humble and/or if you were had a more support. As it stands though what you have written is rude and arrogant, and that signifies much about how you really are. Correct yourself please.

      In Peace.

  37. Im so sorry of what you and your family faced. Wish i could do something about it.
Its not only neuplx, even cinepax, atriums crowd is extremely cheap... I really really wish people should stop going to cinemas so that they would do something about it. (im so sure, its never gonna happen, we all are least bothered and have become selfish)..
All I'll say, Allah is watching and we all have to die one day; apparently people have forgotten that we have to face Him one day.

  40. I don't understand why would Nueplex give you a seat 4 rows above when there are 40 empty seats! they never give 3 people here n there! anyone who has bought tickets EVER would know that.

This is all totally made up and absolute bullshit!

  41. i m so sorry to hear from you whatever happened with you. these managers and staff of neuplex, cinepax, atriums is highly incompetent. U should log a complain in DHA office or write a letter to DHA administrator and i asure u he will take the action against them.

  42. The owners themselves are fraud and cheat, they haven't even paid for the cinema installation till now and are in debt to Mr Ali Dewan owner of IONMedia

  43. Around a month back my family called Nueplex on a Saturday afternoon and asked them if Rio2 was still being shown on Sunday afternoon. The sales team told my family that the show was still on and that they can come. My sister reserved the tickets on phone and reached there with kids from Gulistan-e-Jauhar. When she went to the counter and asked them for tickets they told her that they have put the show off air and its not being shown anymore. My sister told them that they even reserved their tickets and told her to reach an hour prior to the show but they didn't bother listening to her and asked her to take a side as customers were waiting in queue. Pathetic SERVICE. They are simply butchering the customers and ripping them off. We need atleast 3-4 more Nueplex in Karachi so that these buggers could stop flying high.

  45. "I tracked your IP down so I know who this" ??????? Seriously?????
When you gain the attention that you seek with this verbiage do you at the end of the day maintain a database of the people who comment on your blog and later stalk them? The pit that you've dug with this article seems to be getting deeper by the minute on with all the deleted posts I'm sure.

  50. I am sorry to know that you were mistreated. Consumer rights are taken for granted in Pakistan because the economy is in tatters and most of the entreprises are owned by Seths who have no business ethics, to start with. Eve-teasing is an evil that needs to be rooted out with utmost force.

At the same time, I am somewhat perplexed by the elitist tone of your article. It is not good to look down at people who run CD 70. There are millions of them out there and they are not harming anyone, in any way.

On the contrary, those driving Limousines and luxury vehicles, and their children and nephews and nieces, have "effed" this nation, from top to bottom. Many of the cozy thieves you seem to be in awe of are tax evaders, rapists, murderers, hash smokers, serial womanizers and outright demagogues.

I wish you well, but could not stop myself from bursting the little bubble of serenity that you created by thumping hard on the CD-70 wallas. A classist is as bad as a racist.

  51. So sorry that you faced such situation I am never going there. .

  52. that is very rude. I have dealt with nadeem before while arranging my company movies at nuplex but have not met with him. it this is his real face then i am boycotting nuplex for ever.

  53. It depends on how you handle situation. Boycotting and raising your voice over petty issues are just silly (Grow up people). Don't be too quick on judging or making final decision. One must find details on actual event that had taken place. People at Nueplex are very friendly and I have never had any problems with them. There must be some misunderstanding.

"Your incident should not have happened if everyone were to sit on their own seats in first place."

Technology is beautiful; when you purchase ticket the guy at the counter does ask for your permission before printing them out to ensure that you are satisfied with available seats. By paying him money and having him print out those tickets is sort of a commitment that you are making that you will come or seat yourself to designated seats. What if the situation were to be reversed? What then?

I think you should write up an apology and move on with your normal routine...

P.S - Good Luck tracking my I.P Address.
